On Monday, January 15th, 2018, Chess in the Schools celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday with a FREE chess tournament for NYC children. 600 students participated in the event open to students of all ages and skill levels. The event included strong chess players from schools in all five NYC boroughs!
Grandmaster Max Dlugy from Chess Max Academy was our special guest.
Student, parents, and coaches were all excited to meet a GM and to take part in his free raffle for chess lesson and books. Thank you, Max!
We also had NYC Council Members Keith Powers (4th District) and Carlina Rivera (2nd District) on hand to award the winners of the event! Chess in the Schools is honored to have such amazing support from the New York City Council and we look forward to working closely with Council Member Powers and Rivera in the coming years!
Both Council Members tweeted about the event:
Thanks to all that participated in the 2018 CIS MLK JR. Day Chess Tournament!
