College Bound senior visits his top college picks with help from a special scholarship!
Chance Deas was dying to see Cornell University and Ithaca College since the beginning of his senior year. Through online research and discussion with representatives at college fairs, Chance determined that these were two of the best college fits for him. All he needed was to see the colleges in person, but money was the obstacle. CIS College Bound offers free college trips, but this year we weren’t visiting those colleges.
Then along came the College Boarding Pass (CBP) program. CBP is a new non-profit, founded by a Long Island area high school student, Nina Kellner. While visiting colleges in New York City, Nina saw an unmet need for low-income students who aspire to college to find funding for a visit to their top choice school. CBP is dedicated to helping students overcome financial barriers to visiting colleges.
This year, CBP partnered with College Bound to offer a travel scholarship to one deserving senior. Chance Deas delivered a stellar application and his visit to Ithaca and Cornell became a reality.
Hear from Chance about his college visits:
“My visits to Cornell University and Ithaca College were amazing! My mom and I arrived in the town of Ithaca and were immediately greeted by Dr. Scott Campbell, director of admissions for Cornell’s School of Engineering. My tour guide, Graham was a sophomore, studying Applied and Engineering Physics, my first choice for majors. The tour was very personalized; he taught me about the curriculum, extracurricular opportunities, and research opportunities. At Ithaca College, I had an informational interview with Quentin from admissions, which allowed me to get a personal feel for the college without too much pressure. My trip to Ithaca may have been short, but, the sights were breathtaking. The environment emanates a studious, relaxing space, which is where I’d thrive best. I never expected the opportunity to see these colleges up close before. I am grateful to College Bound and College Boarding Pass for making this trip possible!”
On behalf of Chance Deas and the CIS College Bound program, thank you College Boarding Pass!
