Every year, at the Chess in the Schools office in New York City, we provide a special seminar for all students of our College Bound program to help them discover summer job and program opportunities.
At this past Summer Opportunity Fair on February 27th, 60 students received information on twenty jobs and opportunities that they could apply for. We hold this fair in the winter to give our students adequate time to meet the deadlines to apply. We check in with our students throughout the rest of the year on their applications.
We do this because we want all of our students to have a productive summer. We believe that through these programs our students will be able to thrive and gain experience, skills, and connections that will improve their college applications and future employment prospects.
At this fair we had several programs come in person, Teen Art Experience (top left), Futures & Options (top right), Youth Media from Downtown Community Television Center (bottom left), and Camp Ramapo (bottom right) as pictured above to talk to our students and provide them with information on their programs and answer questions.
Ms. Britt from Youth Media from Downtown Community Television Center had this to say about our students:
“Well, I really had a great time talking with all the different students. My most favorite part about the experience was how diverse the group was and how all of these students have come together under the common interest of chess. The students were incredibly nice and so interested in knowing and learning more.”
We can’t wait to see what our students do this summer!
